I would like to give you a little more detail about myself, the kind of cases I handle, and my philosophy of how to handle cases. I have been practicing law since 1969. I got my start as a Captain in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps with the United States Army from 1969-1973 defending soldiers in General and Special courts martial cases. This was during the time that our soldiers were coming back from Vietnam. I sometimes was required to try up to nine court martial's per day. My experience during these years helped me to develop trial skills that I carry with me to this day. It was a very hectic time with a lot of soldiers being charged with various crimes. I was required to defend them and often go against commanding officers including general officers and post commanders. This kind of trial experience has given me a solid foundation for my future trial work.
After leaving the Untied States Army, I became the attorney for the City of Fayetteville North Carolina's Police Department. I was there from 1973-1975. As a police attorney, I was in charge of the organized crime control unit. I tried special cases of a high profile nature having to do with our investigations. I had a wide variety of experience in dealing with city officials, police and sheriff departments, and of course criminals. I organized and conducted sting operations and worked closely with the federal and state law enforcement agencies in the surrounding area.
From 1975-1977 I was chairman of the legal department of the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemburg, North Carolina. There I developed training programs for North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers state wide. I authored a manual entitled "Criminal Evidence for North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers". I taught police officers, sheriff deputies, and SBI agents the fundamentals of criminal investigations, interrogations, search and seizure and criminal law. I developed a comprehensive training program for the SBI during this period of time.
Following these experiences, I have been practicing law with an emphasis on trial litigation. For the last several years, I have concentrated my practice in the area of personal injury, medical malpractice, nursing home abuse, commercial, and other types of litigation such as contract disputes, defamation of character, invasion of privacy and other civil actions.
Each case that I accept on retainer, I accept with either a flat fee agreement or a contingency. Sometimes it is a combination of both. I never charged clients by the hour. I believe that a client should know exactly what the cost will be. If it is a case with large damages, then I often handle it strictly on a contingency basis so the client will not pay any up front fee. There are other cases that cannot be done strictly on a contingency basis, but all this will be discussed in great detail with the client. My clients have access to me at any time, and I give them my cell phone number. Anyone who retains my services has a right to call and discuss their case with me at any time. They will not talk with a secretary, and I return all voice messages left. I firmly believe in a close and personal relationship with each client.
